Following Jorge Masvidal's withdrawal from UFC 269, Leon Edwards is currently without an opponent, but one prominent rising star has made it clear that he is up for the bout.
Leon Edwards was originally supposed to fight Chimaev at the main event of UFC Fight Night 183 on December 19, 2020. However, the Chechnyan-born Swedish fighter contracted COVID-19 and suffered lingering symptoms that left him in hospital on several occasions. Edwards tested positive not long after Chimaev did and also suffered bad symptoms, causing him to lose roughly 12 pounds according to reports. As such, the bout was cancelled and neither fighter managed to compete. With notable UFC wins against Rafael dos Anjos, Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone, Edwards has worked his way up to a No.3 ranking, while Chimaev sits at No.10.
